Happy Children's Day!

By Natalie Barentson

Tuesday is Children’s Day in Romania, or Ziua Copilului!

Children’s Day is an international holiday started in 1925 by the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland. It is celebrated on different days all over the globe but is observed on June 1st in Romania. In the United States, it’s celebrated on the second Sunday of June.

The purpose of Children’s Day is to celebrate children, increase their welfare, and bring awareness to child abuse. Many government agencies commemorate this holiday by debuting new initiatives, such as fighting HIV/AIDS, furthering kid’s education, and stopping child exploitation. This holiday an incredible way to honor and protect the children of the world!

There are a few ways that Romanians honor Children’s Day. Teachers might give certificates to their students to encourage them. Some museums will hold art exhibits for kid’s artwork. Parks will have events with balloons, face painting, and snacks for children to enjoy. At home, families might have a special dinner with their kids’ favorite foods. It’s a very fun day!

This Tuesday, you can celebrate Children’s Day alongside our Romanian brothers and sisters. Here are a few easy ideas to honor the kids in your life!

Pray

Prayer is an easy and effective way to care for kids. Pray they know the Lord, that they grow up strong and healthy, and that the Lord places Godly people in their lives to mentor and lead them. You can also pray for your sponsored child and/or the children in RtC’s ministry in Romania!

Encourage a Child

Find a simple way to speak life into the kids around you. Take a minute to compliment them, make them a fun certificate, or write a short note for their lunchbox. As Proverbs 16:24 says, “kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and health for the body”.

Do Something Fun

If possible, do an activity that would make them smile. Some ideas are: watch their favorite TV show with them, take them to dinner at Chick-Fil-A, make a special park visit, or take them to the pool. It doesn’t have to be big!
We hope you enjoy Children’s Day this Tuesday, and take a minute to celebrate the kids in your life and within the RtC ministry. Your love and care for these children makes all the difference!
