Not everything we have works as a gift to our favorite ministries. As we develop our lifestyle of giving, we may find we have items that can be used by a ministry or individuals in need. Giving tangible items is sometimes referred to as making a gift-in-kind.
Worthy organizations, such as your church or city rescue mission, often have resale shops that provide important support for their outreach efforts. Furniture, clothing, appliances, and other household items can provide real benefit to these ministries.
Within your community there are likely many families who can benefit from extra (or unwanted) books, cookware, dishes, vehicles, office equipment, and even food items.
Taking a Closer Look
As you look at your world – with a desire to see as God sees – perhaps you will discover you can immediately provide the very thing that someone else desperately needs.
A good place to start is with an inventory of the things you have. Those tools you never use can help a carpenter build. Bolts of fabric can become quilts for children. Unused gift cards can meet a need of the poor. Games and puzzles can provide entertainment at a senior center. What may seem a small gift to you may seem the grandest gift to another. A gift of something you no longer value can be redeemed to meet an important need for another.
In your lifestyle of giving -- a gift-in-kind may be the kindest gift of all.
